Open Question: Help! Problem in training a 12week old puppy.?

It's my first time to have a puppy(12wk old mixed japanese/pekengese) and I want to teach him how to do tricks and I just started doing it. I already watched videos and read books on how to train dogs and learned that giving treats is a technique used to elicit the dog's obedience. But I don't think this applies on my dog because after giving him a treat, he gets out of focus and unable to continue with the training lesson because all he does is to beg for the next treat.
